Journalism 133: Prof. Craig: Story Idea Exercise

Story Idea Exercise for Nov. 26

I've listed the basic facts behind a current news topic below.  Your job is to come up with as many story ideas as possible based on these facts.  They can be standalone stories, sidebar stories, follow-up stories, features based on the facts, or any other type of story.

At the beginning of this semester, we discussed how one of a journalist's best traits is curiosity.  Use the facts presented here as a jumping-off point for exploring other possibilities. What unanswered questions or related issues lead to possible story ideas from these facts?

Here are the facts:

    • According to a study by the National Insurance Crime Bureau, more than 1 million cars and other personal vehicles were stolen in America in 2023.
    • This is up more than 41 percent from the 721,000 vehicles stolen five years ago, in 2019.
    • California had the highest number of vehicles stolen among all states, with more than 208,000.

Take the next 10 minutes or so to put together a list of possible story ideas based on these facts, and email them to me.  We will reconvene to discuss ideas from the group after you send them.
